We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help you find your next BOTE.

Finding the Right Product For You

The following answers are a great way to help you get started on your journey to finding the right BOTE for you.

Which board is best for me?

The main determining factor is solid vs. inflatable. If you have the ability to store and transport a solid paddle board, go for it! If not, or you plan to travel quite often with your board, definitely grab an inflatable (Aero). Each board is engineered to serve a purpose, so getting you on the board best suited for the activities you will be doing, your stature, and types of waters you will be paddling is a key step to maximizing your time on the water. Which board is best for fishing?

BOTE was the first paddle board company to engineer it’s boards to address the fishing market. It started with two boards, the HD and the BOTE board (now called the Flood). Today the line is comprised of a variety of fishing platforms. We even developed an inflatable kayak, the LONO, because we knew we could do it better. From the beginning, that’s been our mantra – design and build the most elegant products that perform like no other product in the market.

Rob McAbee staked out on the Verge Camo Rackham Aero in Cayo Frances, Belize.

“You don’t go out to the golf course with one club. There’s no perfect board for every set of circumstances. I tend to tell people to prioritize and figure out what type of fishing you’ll be doing most often and choose the best board for that.”

– ROB MCABEE, BOTE CREATIVE BRAND DIRECTOR

The journey of a thousand paddles begins with the first step. There’s a sea of options based on what type of fishing you normally do and how you’ll transport the paddleboard to the water.

Our premium fishing platforms include the BOTE HD, Rackham and Rover. Selecting your ideal board depends on the body of water and species you’re fishing for. But it also comes down to personal preference, transportation and storage.

The journal "The Best Fishing Paddle Board" details all you need to know regarding which board will be best for you for fishing!

Which paddle board is best for yoga?

The Full Trax style of our boards are great for yoga as it allows you to have grip for the whole length of the board. Whether you're using a traditional stand-up paddleboard like our Flood Aero, or a floating yoga platform like the Inflatable Dock FX, the buoyant platform is going to dare you to really dig into your poses. The instability of a floating platform not in motion adds a new element to your flow. You'll learn to push through by focusing harder on your weight distribution, breathing pattern, and transitions.

The Flood and HD are the best yoga platforms though. The size and design of these vessels are ideal for yoga and just about anything.

Which board is best for touring?

We would recommend The Traveller! Training and expedition are the Traveller's forte. Whether it's speed and agility training or embarking on a lengthy journey, this board has your back! Efficient-yet smooth, stable-yet agile, sexy-yet tough. Perfect for paddling in open water, lakes, and rivers with the ability to be loaded down with essential gear. It’s sleek and slim design paired with lightweight epoxy construction make the Traveller perfect for going the distance. The lower center of gravity offer stability in a paddle board that's second-to-none - perfect for long distances in open water and fitness training for core strength and superior balance.

Can I travel with my board on top of my car?

Absolutely! BOTE offers a wide range of transport accessories to help you get your board from point A to point B

Be sure to use the Board Sox for short trips or the Board Bag for longer transits. This will protect your board from sun rays and debris kicked up from travel.

If transporting an Aero (inflatable) product, make sure to transport below 10 psi to allow for heat-caused air expansion which will put stress on the seams. Once you arrive at your destination, just top off with air and you are good to go!

Can I bring my dog on your products?

You sure can! Just note you may get some cosmetic scratches in the deck pad from the pup's claws. That just comes with the territory. Want more tips on paddling with your pup? Check out our journal: SUP Pups 101: Introducing Your Dog to Paddle Boarding.

Can I use a trolling motor on any of the boards?

We have not tested and do not recommend trolling motors. The Rover and Rover Aero are able to accommodate motors, but we have not tested trolling motors. Please note that putting any product under power, with the exception of the Rover and Rover Aero, will void the warranty.

Do you sell used or demo boards?

We currently do not sell any used our demo boards online. On occasion, our Flagship stores will carry scratch and dent products, but availability and stock will vary.

What size board do I need?

The first step is to think of how much weight you will have on the board. For rigid boards if you will have under 160 pounds (paddler plus gear) the 10'6" is the way to go. Anything over that, 12' will be best. Keep in mind, it is easier for a smaller paddler to paddle a larger board, than a larger paddler to paddle a smaller board. With the Traveller boards, the longer the board the faster it will be. The 12'6" Traveller is best for smaller paddlers looking to get some good speed, while the 14' is best suited for taller paddlers looking for greater speeds. With the Rackham, the 12' gets the job done in most occasions. The 14' is really only needed in situations you'll be in very rough water or will have tons of gear, massive fish sold separately.

Which boards can I fish from?

Any! However, The Rackham is our main fishing board. Featuring a very high max capacity, two sets of Rac Receivers and two sets of side bite fin boxes. the Rackham is the ultimate fishing rig. The square rails and recessed deck make the board extremely stable and allow the board to handle chop very well. The HD you can certainly fish from, but there is just one set of Rac Receivers and it does have a lower max weight capacity. The Rackham Aero and HD Aero are great fishing platforms if you're wanting to go the AeroBOTE route.

Solid Watercraft

Get answers to some of the most common questions we receive about our solid paddle boards.

What are your solid boards made of?

Our solid boards are made from our Gatorshell technology. With our Gatorshell boards, we’ve achieved seamless construction by combining all new materials with ballistics grade composites. The result, a no compromise outer shell that is smooth, solid, and tough…very tough. According to energy impact comparisons, our Gatorshell board achieved six times tougher construction vs. our handcrafted epoxy boards. Because plastic is less dense than epoxy, our Gatorshell boards are more buoyant as compared to their epoxy equivalent. This makes them float higher in the water for a more comfortable paddle, while also adding increased capacity. The Gatorshell is an ABS Polycarbonate blended plastic surrounding an EPS foam core. Kevlar, epoxy and fiberglass are also contained within the board between the Gatorshell layer and Foam Core.

ABRASION-RESISTANT
An abrasion-resistant outter shell means you don’t have to sweat the small stuff, like that time you got too close to that dock.

BEAUTIFUL FIT & FINISH
Gatorshell BOTE paddle boards are constructed to the highest standards in the industry and feature uniquely beautiful designs on par with our hand-crafted epoxy boards.

SEAMLESS CONSTRUCTION
Our proprietary process allows for seamless construction. No cheap-looking rubber gaskets or unsightly fissures down the sides of our boards.

GATORSKIN TEXTURED DECK PAD
High-quality, heat-sealed multi-textured deck pads feature a unique gator skin embossed texture only found on Gatorshell models.

INNOVATIVE FEATURES
Gatorshell BOTE paddleboards feature all the innovative features found on our hand-crafted epoxy boards, so you can outfit them the way you want, for the things you like to do.

IMPACT-RESISTANT
Gatorshell construction is 6x tougher than our hand-crafted epoxy boards giving you the freedom to be, well, yourself.

RESPONSIBLY CRAFTED
The advanced plastics we use to build Gatorshell BOTE paddle boards are made from partially reclaimed material. As if that wasn’t good enough, excess material from its construction is again repurposed, meaning less waste, and that’s good for all of us.

Are solid BOTE boards durable?

All BOTE boards are very durable! Here is a link to learn more about our Gatorshell Technology. According to energy impact comparisons, our Gatorshell boards have a 6X tougher construction vs. handcrafted epoxy boards. Gatorshell Technology is designed to protect the EPS core of your board from water intrusion and provide a superior solution compared to other construction methods. If you do have any damage to your board, send us some pictures and we are happy to help. It is most likely just some damage to the paint. Keep in mind our boards are designed for outdoor use. With that, you will get some scratches, dings, and scuffs. If your board is in pristine condition, it's not being used enough!

What is the Rackham Gatorshell best for?

The Rackham was originally designed for fishing! With the square rails and recessed deck, The Rackham handles chop extremely well. This rig is also best for larger paddlers, those carrying large amounts of gear and paddling in rougher waters.

Do you have shallow water fins?

We offer various shallow water options for both solid and inflatable boards and kayaks.

  • All inflatable watercraft are compatible with the 3″ Aero Shorty Center Fin and the 6″ Aero Midtown Center Fin.
  • Most of our solid paddle boards are compatible with the 3″ Side-Bite Fins. Please note that all Traveller paddle boards as well as the 12′ Flood paddle board are not compatible with side-bite fins. All solid Rackham paddle boards and any Bug Slinger™ style HD paddle boards are compatible with two pairs (4 side-bite fins total) as they have 4 side fin boxes.

What is the difference between the Breeze Gatorshell and the Flood Gatorshell?

The Flood will have more innovations (Rac Receivers, Bungees on the nose and tail, a Stashpod). The Flood is also available in two sizes and includes a 2-piece adjustable carbon fiber paddle, while the Breeze comes in one size and includes a 2-piece adjustable fiberglass paddle.

What is the difference between the Flood Gatorshell and the HD Gatorshell?

The main difference between the Flood and HD is the hull design. The Flood has a displacement hull, so will sit on top of the water. The HD has a displacement hull so will cut through the water. In other words, the Flood is best for flat water and catching some small surf. The HD will be faster than the Flood, have a higher weight capacity and have some additional innovations such as the Paddle Sheath. Both are great boards for doing just about anything! To learn more about hull design check out our journal: Choose Your Hull: A Look at Hull Design

How heavy are your solid paddle boards?

Our boards are heavier than some. But it is due to the build quality and built in innovations. Each board's Product Detail Page has size and weight information included for your reference. If weight is a concern, give yourself a few times out on the water to get down a good system for what works for you. Everyone is different and finds the most efficient way to load and unload when paddling alone. You won't notice weight once out on the water. Definitely check out the Wheel Rac for the fastest and easiest way to transport to the water.

When should I buy the Traveller?

If you're looking to paddle longer distances, quickly the Traveller is the way to go. This is our most efficient board, but is the most stable at higher rates of speed. Our main expedition board, will get you where you need to, pretty darn quickly.

When should I buy the HD Gatorshell?

You are looking for a multipurpose, recreational and all-around board that can do just about anything. The HD is designed to slice through the water and be very effecient yet stable at all speeds.

When should I buy the Flood Gatorshell?

The Flood is our most relaxed board and awesome for flat water paddling, yoga or catching some small surf.

Inflatable Watercraft

Below are common questions we receive related to both inflatable paddle boards and inflatbale kayaks.

What are your Aero inflatable products made of?

We are able to achieve unsurpassed rigidity in our inflatable paddle boards through our unique construction technology.

The secret is the use of composite drop stitch fibers which connect the top and bottom layers of high quality, military-grade PVC. When inflated to the recommended PSI, the fibers cause the air pressure to distribute evenly across the top and bottom surfaces forming a hard, stable platform. Want to learn more? Read our journal Buy Aero not Inflatable: Why AeroTech is Better

Aero paddle boards made with AeroBOTE technology:
The inner core of our AeroBOTEs have tens of thousands of composite drop-stitch fibers that marry the top and bottom halves of the chamber. When under pressure the fibers become taught and create an extremely rigid, solid platform. So let your adventurous side run wild and take an AeroBOTE with you!

Aero paddle boards made with AeroUltra technology:
Constructed with the same military-grade PVC skin as our AeroBOTEs, AeroULTRA technology is highly durable but also lighter in weight. The latest in composite drop stitch production allows these boards to be made with a single layer without sacrificing typical performance. AeroULTRA represents the new way to get into paddling an everyday grab and go SUP.

Which Aero products have which technology?
Please see the following chart for a list of what type of AeroTech each product is made from.

Are Aero inflatable BOTE products durable?

BOTE® boards are very durable! Here is a link to learn more about our Aero Technology. BOTE inflatable paddle boards transform from a form factor small enough to fit in a backpack into a fully-functional SUP in minutes, which allows for superior ease of transportation and storage. Don’t worry about scratches and dings because the military-grade PVC skin is extra tough, while the inner core of our AeroBOTEs has tens of thousands of composite fibers that connect the top and bottom halves of the board and, when under pressure, create solid board rigidity. So let your adventurous side run wild and take your AeroBOTE with you! Shop our inflatable paddle boards here!

What PSI do I Inflate my Inflatable Paddle Board To?

12-15 psi works perfectly. If you have a lot of gear/weight on the board, you definitely want to get closer to 15 than 12.

Can I store the Aero boards and kayaks while they are inflated?

Absolutely! We prefer to spend time on the water as opposed to inflating and deflating our boards. If you do store your Aero watercraft while inflated, make sure to drop the air pressure down to 8-10 PSI (or til it's compressible by hand) if you're keeping your board somewhere not temperature controlled; heat causes air to expand. Science.

What accessories are best for my LONO Aero Kayak?

The LONO Aero is our ultimate fishing kayak and is compatible with many BOTE accessories, including accessories made specifically for the LONO like the Rocket Rac. The Rocket Rac is designed to fit seamlessly on the LONO Aero. Simply insert it into the Rac Receivers behind the LONO’s adjustable seat and you’ll have storage for up to four rods (fits both conventional and fly.) Use the upright holders for getting around and the angled holders for trolling. And when you’re not fishing, all four can simply be used for storage.

Below are our recommendations for a completely decked out LONO Aero.

Will the Aero Chair fit in my LONO?

If you are looking for a seat outside of the kayak seat that came with your Aero inflatable kayak, the standard size inflatable Aero Chair will actually fit in your LONO! However, please note the Inflatable Aero Chair XL will be too large.

Can I store my board with Paddle Sheath installed?

You can definitely leave the Paddle Sheath installed long-term, but the board will not fit in its storage bag. If you plan to store the board in the storage bag, you will need to remove the paddle sheath.

What is the difference between the Breeze Aero and Flood Aero?

The Flood Aero will have additional innovative features, including Cooler Tie Down points, Rac Receivers, nose and tail bungee tie downs and a water-resistant storage bag). The Breeze is best for light paddles while the Flood is equipped for just about any condition or adventure.

How Do Your inflatable boards and kayaks stand up to oyster beds?

Treat your BOTE just as you would any other boat. You definitely don't want to run over them knowingly and always be cautious when in shallow areas. If you do happen to run over an oyster bed, normally you will have some damage to the outer pvc layer that can be patched easily. The Gatorshell boards will definitely get some scrapes and scratches, but nothing that will affect the overall integrity and performance of the board.

What PSI do I inflate My LONO Aero kayak to?

The LONO does have mulitple chambers. The seat Chamber is best inflated at 7-10 psi and floor and side chambers 10-15 psi.

What PSI do I inflate my Zeppelin Aero kayak to?

Once the pump reaches the PSI set by the knob on the pump, it will shut off automatically. Using the time that the pump is inflated the board to apply sunscreen, pack the cooler and get organized is highly recommended.
