Today, October 1st, Marks the beginning of the 66th annual Destin Fishing Rodeo and more importantly the 4th year of BOTE's sponsorship of the SUP fishing division. We dreamed up the division out of pure desire to see anglers and SUPers show their skills during the month long fishing rodeo. Since day one, the participation has been intense. Everyday people battle over who can bring in the heaviest fish.
When we first approached the Destin Fishing Rodeo with the idea, they were excited but sceptical about the concept. "Will there really be that much participation to warrant it's own category?", or "Couldn't this fall within the kayak division?", were among several of the first questions regarding the division. In the end...the excitment was enough to help push the idea forward and create the first Standup Paddle Board fishing "division" in a major Fishing Tournament.
"We loved the concept of teaming with the Destin Fishing Rodeo because to us it represents more then just competition", explains Magda Cooper of BOTE, "It a month long celebration of the Destin lifestyle. Going to the docks to watch weighins, walking the Harbor, hanging with friends...it really is the best time to truely enjoy Destin. With SUP becoming so engrained in our culture, it's just a perfect match!".
For those of you who may laugh at the thought of landing a big one on a SUP we offer this video from Destin local Mark Rountree. Last Spring he landed a 74lb Cobia from his BOTE...and here's proof.
We encourage anyone who wants to participate in the event to visit Destin and become a part of it. For more info, please visit the Destin Fishing Rodeo at www.destinishingrodeo.org .
