The silence and serenity of the ocean drew me into SUP Yoga. Originally from Navarre, Florida, a small beach town in the Panhandle, I was able to find nature everywhere. Since 2005 I have lived in Hollywood, Florida; a much larger city and it was often hard to find a space within nature to get away from all the outside noise.
Growing up on the water I began boating at 5 and was by scuba diving by 13. The ocean has always been an amazing place for me to clear my mind and find peace.
It soon made sense to combine my profession and passion of Yoga and the Love of the ocean into one pursuit. SUP + Yoga = Happiness for this Yoga Mom!
Even as the mother of a 3 year old boy, I am still able to find time to take out my 10'6" Axiom BOTE Board. The Axiom is my board of choice because it was designed for yoga! It has a full deck pad, a strap so my paddle doesn't float away, and I use the Stash Pod to hold my water bottle. You can also get a 12' Axiom if you are looking for a larger platform. I love to take my BOTE out in Dania Beach and paddle in the calm waters among the mangroves. I find a nice shady spot with a cool breeze and set anchor and begin my yoga practice. When I can plan my day around my BOTE I enjoy driving south to Islamorada in the Florida Keys. I park my car on the side of the road, unload my BOTE and paddle throughout the crystal clear blue water.
I use my board mainly for Yoga but I also love cruising the inter-coastal waterway and surfing off the beach. My favorite feature of the Axiom is the side mount for your paddle, when you practice yoga you can place your paddle on the side so it will not get in the way. Another nice feature is that the surface of the board is covered with a soft mat so you can utilize the entire space of the board for your yoga practice.
When I'm not out on the water practicing, you can find me on the beach, in the studio- pretty much anywhere posing in some way shape or form! AcroYoga is one of my on-land passions. I've been practicing Acro since about 2009 and I am currently Level 1 certified. It takes yoga to the next level- literally. It is a combination of yoga and acrobatics. The practice really cultivates trust and community and is so much FUN! I'm working on taking my acro practices to the water!
SUP Yoga can be awkward at first and you have the potential to fall in the water. But Just like any sport or hobby practice makes better. I recommend being patient, practice at your level, and don’t be so serious. This is fun and challenging, and it’s not a competition. The challenge is developed by building strength and stability by holding yoga poses on an unbalanced surface. The fun is you’re on the water not at work so stop and enjoy the present moment.
What do you need to practice SUP Yoga? First, you will need the basics for being out in the Sun including sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and lots of drinking water. A BOTE Paddle Board (because they are the most stable- I think!), paddle, life vest, and anchor is all the equipment that you need. Then you will be ready to practice SUP Yoga!
Once a Month I host a SUP Yoga class with Flying Fish Paddle Sports in Stuart Florida. It is an amazing group of people of all ages. If you’re local to the area you can contact them through www.flyingfishpaddlesports.com. SUP Yoga has become very popular. It is fun, everyone can do it, it’s outside, and there is a workout hidden in the mix.
